3. Making the flower spike
a. Following the instructions on page 99 for working with spray paint, spray an 8 by 8 in/20 by 20 cm square of the Ivory crepe with the Basil paint. From this square, cut two or three stem strips. Stretch out a section of the spray-painted crepe and use template I to cut six bracts on the fold (see page 87). Cup the whole inside of the bracts, following the instructions on page 88.
b. Cut four template J pieces from the Gold/Orange doublette. Curl the tips of the petals away from the gold side. Dot the bottom of the gold side with glue and twist the bottom to close up the flower.
c. Following the instructions on page 92 for wrapping wire, wrap the top 1/4 in/6 mm of the wire with the crepe. Dot a bract below the glue line and glue it onto the wire so the glue line falls at the line on the wire where the wrapping stops. Resume wrapping, starting by wrapping over the glue line on the bract. Repeat this process to add another bract. Repeat again as if for a third bract, except this time, you’ll put one of the flowers where the bract should be, positioning the flower’s glue line where the bract’s glue line would be. Position a bract over the flower so the flower petals just barely peek out. Glue and wrap for 1/2 in/12 mm and repeat. This time the bract should cover less of the flower. Repeat twice more, wrapping 1/2 in/12 mm farther each time. This time, the bract should be lifted up to let most of the flower show. Use the tip of a wire to help arrange the petals so they look natural under the lifted bract. Wrap down to the end of the stem. Curve the top portion of wine to form a hook-like shape. Decide how tall you want the flower spike, then bend the wire at the point that would be the bottom. Snip the wire 21/2 in/6 cm below the bend.
